About the TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission)
The Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA) is a mathematics aptitude test designed to assess a student’s mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills. It is typically taken by students in Year 12 or Year 13 (ages 16-18) who are applying for maths-related university courses.
Purpose of the TMUA
The TMUA helps universities evaluate applicants’ ability to think mathematically beyond standard A-level or equivalent coursework. A strong TMUA score can strengthen university applications, and some universities may reduce grade offers for students who perform well in the test.
Who Takes the TMUA?
The test is primarily used by students applying for undergraduate courses in:
- Mathematics
- Computer Science
- Engineering
- Economics
- Other maths-intensive subjects
Several UK universities consider TMUA scores, including:
- University of Cambridge (for Computer Science)
- University of Warwick
- Durham University
- University of Bath
- Lancaster University
- University of Sheffield
Students should check individual university requirements, as some recommend the TMUA while others require it.
Format of the TMUA
- Two papers, each lasting 75 minutes.
- Each paper contains 20 multiple-choice questions.
- No calculator is allowed.
- The test focuses on mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, and algebraic manipulation.
When & How is the TMUA Taken?
- The test is typically held in October or November.
- Registration opens in September, and students take the exam at an approved test centre (often their school or college).
- Results are released in November, allowing students to share their scores with universities
